Welcome to TheBacklight
TheBacklight explores the nonprofit cinema ecosystem: the organizations, funders, exhibitors, and creators who put mission over profit. This newsletter is for anyone working at — or curious about — the intersection of philanthropy and filmmaking; not only NonDē (ht: Ted Hope), but also NonCommercial. I’m building this space to share what I’m observing, interrogate processes and systems, and connect people who care about independent media infrastructure and the future of US independent film.
Since 2014 I have been an active and dedicated grant maker, documentary producer, and board member. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I was hardly a cinephile when I started, but over time have developed a true passion for cinematic non-fiction, especially work that pushes the boundary of the form and addresses timeless themes. These are films that are meant to be seen in theaters, so it comes as no surprise that I also care deeply about the state of movie-going. Some of the most exciting work in artist development, project support, and exhibition today is happening in the nonprofit context — which is largely ignored by mainstream entertainment media.
As a former high school English teacher, I am a big believer in “writing to learn,” so most of the time I plan to start an article with a half-baked idea and see where it leads. This is very much a spaghetti-against-the-wall ethos, intended to spark thinking and generate conversation. I’d love you to be a part of it!
