I always found it interesting that the former president of Ford Foundation, Darren Walker, left to be the head of Anonymous Content. I don't know that there's anything we can read into that, but it felt like a surprising move at the time.

It underscores the commitment Ford made to film and storytelling during his tenure, and his belief in its power to shape culture. Before he was Ford’s CEO, Walker was vice president of their Education, Creativity and Free Expression program. In the release announcing the launch of JustFilms in 2011 he is quoted as saying, “Storytelling is a unique and powerful way of helping us understand our past, explore our present and build our future. We see these stories as vital ingredients to social change, translating how people engage with the world and the issues that define our time.”

Thanks for the information. I worked for an alternative energy consulting firm back in the! 90s and our main client was the Rockefeller Foundation's Energy Program. Different field but also incredible commitment to the work they were doing.

As a long time documentary filmmaker whose films have been funded four times by the Ford Foundation, I find Maida Lynn's analysis very enlightening. I hope she follows up when more is known about the Ford Foundations plans for funding independent social issue and cultural filmmaking.
